2026년 하워드 카운티 군수에 출마한 현 카운티 의원 Deb Jung이 최근 **골든 리빙(Golden Living)**과 **하모니 홀(Harmony Hall)**을 방문해 지역 주민들과 다양한 현안에 대해 의견을 나누는 시간을 가졌다.
이 자리에서 Jung 의원은 특히 거동이 불편하거나 이동이 어려운 노인층의 투표 접근성 문제에 큰 관심을 보였다. 그는 신체적 제약으로 투표에 어려움을 겪는 시니어들이 보다 쉽게 선거에 참여할 수 있도록 투표 시스템과 접근성을 개선할 필요성을 강조했다.
또한 Jung 의원은 시니어 교통 문제, 노인 주거 환경, 병원 진료를 포함한 의료 서비스 확대 등 노년층의 삶과 직결된 다양한 현안에 대해서도 주민들과 의견을 교환했다.
특히 그는 언어와 문화 차이로 인해 의사소통에 어려움을 겪는 한인 노년층의 목소리를 직접 듣는 것이 매우 의미 있는 경험이었다고 밝혔다. Jung 의원은 한국 노인들이 한국 문화와 미국 문화를 함께 즐길 수 있는 골든 리빙과 같은 주거 환경이 매우 중요하다며, 한인 시니어들이 지역사회에서 한국 문화를 접할 수 있는 기회가 더 확대되기를 바란다고 말했다.
아울러 Jung 의원은 한인 시니어뿐만 아니라 아시아계 주민들도 각자의 문화적 정체성을 유지하고 즐길 수 있는 환경이 필요하다며, 다문화 커뮤니티에 대한 지원의 중요성에도 공감을 나타냈다.
그는 특히 골든 리빙에서 한국 문화에 맞춘 다양한 서비스가 제공되고 있는 점에 깊은 인상을 받았다고 전하며, 자연 친화적으로 조성된 텃밭 공간 역시 다른 시설에서는 보기 어려운 매우 인상적인 시설이라고 평가했다.
한편 골든 리빙의 송수 대표는 하워드 카운티 내에서 문화와 언어적 특성을 고려한 장기요양시설과 시니어 주거시설이 더욱 확대되기를 기대한다며, 이를 통해 다양한 커뮤니티의 노년층이 더 나은 삶의 질을 누릴 수 있기를 바란다고 밝혔다. During the visit, Jung expressed strong interest in improving voting accessibility for seniors, especially those with mobility challenges. She emphasized that elderly residents should have easier access to participate in elections.
She also discussed several important issues affecting seniors, including transportation, senior housing, and expanded healthcare services.
Jung noted that hearing directly from Korean senior residents, who sometimes face language barriers, was a meaningful experience. She highlighted the importance of communities like Golden Living, where Korean seniors can enjoy both Korean and American culture.
Jung said multicultural senior communities should be supported so that Asian residents can maintain and celebrate their cultural identity. She was particularly impressed by Golden Living’s community garden and culturally tailored services.
Golden Living CEO Song Soo expressed hope that Howard County will expand culturally and linguistically appropriate senior housing and care facilities, allowing diverse communities to enjoy a better quality of life.
